Recently, the kickoff meeting and implementation plan demonstration for the national key R&D program "Key Technologies for Filling, Storage, Transportation, and Utilization of 50MPa High-Pressure Type III Hydrogen Cylinders" was successfully held at the Hefei General Machinery Research Institute. Led by the National Energy Administration, this project aims to address industry pain points such as low transportation efficiency and high costs associated with 20MPa high-pressure gaseous hydrogen. Through comprehensive technological R&D and demonstration applications, it will propel China's hydrogen storage and transportation technology to the international forefront.
Amid the rapid development of China's hydrogen energy industry, the localization of core equipment has reached a critical breakthrough. As a leader in the hydrogen compressor sector, FKW, leveraging its three decades of deep technical expertise in process gas compressors, is participating in the "Design and Development of High-Pressure Ratio, Large-Capacity Diaphragm Hydrogen Compressors" project. This effort aims to elevate the autonomy of China's high-pressure hydrogen storage and transportation equipment to new heights.
Reflecting on FKW's technological breakthroughs, the company has not only successfully developed China's first 90MPa large-capacity hydrogen refueling station compressor but also pioneered ultra-high-pressure diaphragm compressor technologies at 250MPa and 320MPa. These products are widely used in cutting-edge fields such as aerospace and military applications, where technical requirements are extremely stringent, showcasing exceptional technical prowess. In the civilian sector, the company's tailor-made 22MPa high-power diaphragm hydrogen compressors for the chemical industry have accelerated the large-scale application of hydrogen energy, becoming a key driver for industry advancement.
This collaborative project is led by the Hefei General Machinery Research Institute and unites leading enterprises across the industrial chain to tackle hydrogen energy challenges. FKW is tasked with core responsibilities, including the development of high-pressure ratio, large-capacity diaphragm hydrogen compressors, as well as optimization of hydrogen refueling station networks, process design, and full-process demonstration. The new compressor operates under inlet pressure of 1.5MPa, with maximum discharge pressure ≥55MPa, capacity ≥2000Nm³/h, energy consumption ≤3.5kWh/kg, and drive power exceeding 500kW.
FKW not only focuses on technological innovation but also actively contributes to industry standardization. In 2022, the company spearheaded the release of the *Technical Specification for Safe Use of Diaphragm Compressors in Hydrogen Refueling Stations*, filling a gap in domestic safety standards. In 2024, it led the立项 (initiation) of the *Technical Specification for Diaphragm Hydrogen Compressors*, establishing a comprehensive standard system covering design, manufacturing, and operational acceptance. Through the synergy of "technology + standards," FKW provides systematic solutions for the safe and efficient operation of hydrogen equipment, demonstrating its commitment to industry responsibility.
As global energy transitions accelerate, hydrogen energy has become a critical pathway for China to achieve its "dual-carbon" goals. The implementation of this national key R&D program marks China's entry into the deep end of independent innovation in high-pressure hydrogen storage and transportation. The project's outcomes will be directly applied to hydrogen refueling station networks, hydrogen utilization in the chemical industry, and other scenarios. It is expected to reduce hydrogen storage and transportation costs while providing key technological support for the promotion of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and the large-scale development of green hydrogen industries.
